WHAT IS THE BARR-REEVE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION?

An affiliate of Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA) is a national scholarship program, founded in 1958 by Dr. Irving A. Fradkin in Fall River, Massachusetts. The Barr-Reeve Scholarship Foundation (BRSF) was organized by teachers, school administrators, and citizens of the Barr-Reeve community as an affiliate of CSFA in February of 1988. Barr-Reeve teacher, Charles A. Kavanaugh, has served as president and publicity chair of the foundation since its beginning. The BRSF is operated with volunteer, non-salaried school district teachers and citizens. The Barr-Reeve Scholarship Foundation as an affiliate of CSFA is an incorporated, nonprofit, tax exempt organization.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF BRSF?

The expressed purpose is to award scholarships to deserving graduates and post graduates of Barr-Reeve on a fair, equitable and nondiscriminatory basis. An individual, group, organization, business or industry may sponsor and present a scholarship in the name of such a donor for a contribution of $100 or more permanent trusts can be established with contributions of $2000 or more – this amount need not all be paid at the same time.

MAY I INCLUDE THE B-RSF IN MY WILL?

The founders of this local chapter believe that any sincerely determined student, whether average or above average who is in good standing with public officials has a right to every consideration. Any graduating senior who plans to attend college or a vocational school after graduation my apply. In addition, Barr-Reeve graduates who are at the sophomore, junior, senior or 5th/6th year of college are encouraged to renew their honor scholarship for each year providing they are still meeting all academic progress requirements. Applications are considered on an individual basis and application for renewal must be made before July 1 for the succeeding year.

DOES THE APPLICANT HAVE A CHOICE OF COLLEGE?

Yes, scholarships are awarded for attendance at any post-secondary college, university, vocational school or trade school recognized as an accredited school.

DOES THIS PLAN CONFLICT WITH OTHER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS?

Dollars for Scholars Awards will be coordinated through Barr-Reeve High School so as to spread benefits across the greatest number of students possible. It will supplement state, federal, and college programs for deserving students.

WHAT TYPE OF AWARD IS GIVEN?

Scholarship awards are given as honor scholarships. While the honor scholarship implies a moral but not a legal obligation of repayment, experience after 25 years has proven most recipients “pay their scholarship forward” in a timely manner. All contributions that are “paid forward” will be tax deductible (please check with your tax advisor). These contributions will be used to help other Barr-Reeve Scholarship Foundation recipients finance his/her education

HOW CAN I HELP THE BRSF NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE?

All contributions, regardless of size, are important! With the costs of higher education increasing, many students are needing sufficient funds to make their educational dreams com true. Together we can pool our funds to help deserving students reach for their goals. It is this sort of working together and sharing that has strengthened the unity of our community in other times of need and worthy causes. consider what kind of a financial contribution you might now make as a gift or memorial remembrance. Consider also something for the future in the way of a will bequeath. Let our young people know we appreciate them, support them and are pulling for them to be successful. Let our support of our younger generation be yet another dimension of the Barr-Reeve Challenge--"Dream Dreams Of Things That Never Have Been And Ask....Why Not!"
